DESCRIPTION:UCLA Institute for Digital Research and Education is happy to be a collaborating host site for the “Scaling to Petascale Institute” to be held during June 26-30\, 2017. \nRegistrations are now open at https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/petascale-summer-institute/registration \nScaling to Petascale Institute: \n\nDo you have a computational problem that would benefit from using a large scale computing system?\nDo you need to scale your simulation or data analysis to a Petascale system?\n\nThis institute is for people developing\, modifying and supporting research projects who seek to enhance their knowledge and skills to scale software to Petascale and emerging extreme scale computing systems. Participants should have familiarity with Linux\, programming in Fortran\, C\, C++\, Python or similar language\, and familiarity with MPI (message passing interface). There will be hands-on activities for many of the sessions. \nPresentations will be made by faculty and professionals from Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF)\, the Blue Waters project at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)\, National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)\, Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF)\, Stony Brook University\, and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). \nAttend the Institute in person at UCLA-IDRE.  Participants will be able to verbally ask questions of the presenters through two-way video conferencing facilities. Participants will receive training accounts on the Blue Waters\, NERSC and TACC systems. Staff will be available at each site to assist during hands-on sessions. DESCRIPTION:This session is a general introduction to how to use UCLA Hoffman2 Cluster. The objective is to familiarize current and potential cluster users with the Hoffman2 Cluster\, so they can make the best use of UCLA computational resources. The following topics will be covered: \n1. How to access and login to the Hoffman2 Cluster\, primarily in terminal/command-line mode.\n2. Exploration of how to run various computational tasks on or from the Hoffman2 Cluster\, illustrated by hands-on example transcripts.\n3. A brief introduction to Univa Grid Engine (UGE) commands and how to achieve more control over resources. \nThis session is appropriate for entry-level and mid-level cluster users. He is the University of Arizona Regents’ Professor and Thomas R. Brown Chair Professor in Management and Technology. He is also a Fellow of ACM\, IEEE and AAAS. Dr. Chen recently served as the lead Program Director (expert) of the Smart and Connected (SCH) Program at the NSF (2014-2015)\, a multi-year multi-agency health IT research program of USA. He is author/editor of 20 books\, 280 SCI journal articles\, and 150 refereed conference articles covering digital library\, data/text/web mining\, business analytics\, security informatics\, and health informatics. His overall h-index is 91 (25\,000 citations for 900 papers according to Google Scholar)\, among the highest in management information systems and top 50 in computer science. Dr. Chen founded the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Arizona in 1989\, which has received more than $40M in research funding from NSF\, NIH\, NLM\, DOD\, DOJ\, CIA\, DHS\, and other agencies (90 grants\, 40 from NSF). He has served as Editor-in-Chief of major ACM/IEEE\, and Springer journals and conference/program chair of major ACM/IEEE/MIS conferences in digital library\, information systems\, security informatics\, and health informatics. He is also a successful IT entrepreneur. His COPLINK/i2 system for security analytics was commercialized in 2000 and acquired by IBM as its leading government analytics product in 2011. Dr. Chen has served as an advisor to major federal research programs and was a Scientific Counselor of the National Library of Medicine (USA)\, National Library of China\, and Academia Sinica (Taiwan). He is a visiting chair professor at several major universities in China (Tsinghua University) and Taiwan (National Taiwan University). SUMMARY:Computing Fluid Flows on Multi-GPU Cluster using Lattice Boltzmann Method

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) as an explicit numerical scheme requiring only neighboring operations\, is very suitable for parallel or GPU computations. Thus\, GPU has been successfully used for lattice Bolztmann computations\, which demonstrated that the computational power of GPU far exceeds that of PC-based CPU. There are several strategies to further improve the GPU performance\, such as reducing the data transaction between host and device\, and using efficient memory management. Utilizing shared memory was shown to increase the performance of GPU. Another way to increase the performance is adopting different streaming strategy to optimize the data transfer between the GPU global memory and shared memory. On the other hand\, multi-GPU computation can certainly elevate the performance. This can be achieved by using multi GPUs on a single node through OpenMP. Alternatively\, for cross node GPU computations\, Message Passing Interface (MPI) on cluster of GPUs can be employed. Here\, issues\, such as the memory management and the latency during multi-GPU computations are addressed to seek possible enhancement of the computational efficiency. Numerical examples investigated are turbulent duct and channel flows and two phase flows of colliding liquid droplets. \nSpeaker’s Bio:\nProfessor Chao-An Lin received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from National Chiao Tung University\, Taiwan and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)\, UK in 1986 and 1991. After one year postdoctoral work at UMIST\, in 1991 Dr. Lin joined the faculty of the department of Power Mechanical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan\, where he also served as the deputy chair (2007-2009) and department chair (2009 -2015).  He is also the honorary visiting professor at University of Liverpool\, UK (2015-2019).\nProfessor Lin’s research interests include flow physics and turbulence modeling\, bio-medical fluid dynamics and development of efficient numerical methods and in particular the development of immersed boundary method\, lattice Boltzmann method and simulations using multi-GPU cluster. Professor Lin is the associate fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and is also members of the executive committees of Taiwan society of mechanical engineer and Taiwan society of Aeronautics and Astronautics.  Dr. Lin was the recipient of Shila Mo memorial prize of UMIST (UK) in 1991\, and was awarded the distinguished teacher award from ministry of education of Taiwan in 2008. He also serves in different committees of international conferences (Parallel CFD\, Turbulent Shear Flow Phenomenon\, ERCOFTAC Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modeling and Measurements\, Asian Symposium on Computational Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow\, Asia CFD). He edited special issues in Computers and Fluids\, and Computers and Mathematics with Applications\, and Energies. SUMMARY:National Leadership Class Computing Resources and Opportunities for UCLA Researchers
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Energy\, National Science Foundation\, and the National Aeronautical Space Agency support an ecosystem of “leadership class” computing facilities housing some of the world’s most advanced supercomputers and high-end visualization and data analysis resources. These facilities provide “free” computing cycles and storage to researchers from academia. Access to these resources is obtained through an application process that is based on the merit of the research objectives\, and demonstration of the efficacy and parallel scalability of the software. \nThe aim of this presentation is to explain the capabilities of various leadership class computing facilities. The method combines ideas from classical nonlinear PDE-based image segmentation with fast and accessible linear algebra methods for computing information about the spectrum of the graph Laplacian. The goal of the algorithms is to solve semi-supervised and unsupervised graph cut optimization problems. I will present results for image processing applications such as image labeling and hyperspectral video segmentation\, and results from machine learning and community detection in social networks\, including modularity optimization posed as a graph total variation minimization problem. \nSpeaker’s Bio:\nAndrea Bertozzi is an applied mathematician with expertise in nonlinear partial differential equations and fluid dynamics. She also works in the areas of geometric methods for image processing\, crime modeling and analysis\, and swarming/cooperative dynamics. Bertozzi completed all her degrees in Mathematics at Princeton. She was an L. E. Dickson Instructor and NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago from 1991-1995. She was the Maria Geoppert-Mayer Distinguished Scholar at Argonne National Laboratory from 1995-6. She was on the faculty at Duke University from 1995-2004 first as Associate Professor of Mathematics and then as Professor of Mathematics and Physics. She has served as the Director of the Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems while at Duke. Bertozzi moved to UCLA in 2003 as a Professor of Mathematics. Since 2005 she has served as Director of Applied Mathematics\, overseeing the graduate and undergraduate research training programs at UCLA. In 2012 she was appointed the Betsy Wood Knapp Chair for Innovation and Creativity. Bertozzi’s honors include the Sloan Research Fellowship in 1995\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1996\, and SIAM’s Kovalevsky Prize in 2009. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010 and to the Fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2010. DESCRIPTION:The PETSc library contains a number of reusable data structures and solvers for linear and nonlinear systems of equations that can greatly simplify the programming work of scientific computing. While it is possible to code everything “from scratch” using MPI and C/C++/Fortran\, some may find code written reusing PETSc’s data structures are easier to maintain and extend in the long term. SUMMARY:Science Visualization
DESCRIPTION:This two-day training course will introduce students to data visualization with a primary focus on visualization of large volumetric data resulting from simulation and instrumentation.  We begin with an overview of visualization as a whole\, beginning with a simple taxonomy: illustration\, which uses techniques of computer graphics and animation to convey concepts\, and data-driven visualization which  interpret data as imagery to convey the content of the data   Data-driven visualization is further divided into two broad areas.  Information visualization is concerned with visualizing discrete data such as is often found in Excel spreadsheets and relational databases – think a sales database\, including a record for many customer transactions including date\, product list and so forth.   Scientific data  is concerned with continuous data defined over a domain – think weather data\, representing variables like temperature and pressure in a three-dimensional region of the atmosphere.   This section will include copious examples of each class of visualization. \nThe next section provides a brief  introduction to scientific illustration\, in which a specialist will provide a hands on demonstration of an interactive tool for modeling\, animating and rendering  visualizations.   Either Blender or Maya will be demonstrated.   This section is intended to give students a broad overview of the capabilities of these systems and to enable them to identify situations in which these are the appropriate tools. \nFollowing will be an introduction to information visualization.   We begin with an brief history of info viz\, then discuss data and techniques and an overview of the software tools available.  Following this will be a  demonstration of a commercial end-user application (Tableau). \nWe then segue to scientific visualization\, the focus of the course.   In an introductory section we will present an overview of scientific data.  We begin  with a conceptual approach to scientific data as functions over a time/space domain\, then discuss how this data is represented as time/space grids with variables associated with grid points and cells.  We discuss how visualization systems transform such data to imagery.   We then present hands-on demonstrations of open-source general-purpose tools for scientific visualization – ParaView and VisIt.   Following demonstrations of the interactive interface to each of these\, we will discuss techniques in which scripting can be used to generate visualizations off-line.   We will then discuss issues that arise when  datasets become very large\, discussing parallel execution of the tools\, and data layout for optimal I/O.  This will include a presentation of the facilities we maintain at the Texas Advanced Computing Center for high-performance visualization of very large datasets and how we provide these services to remote users. \nRegistration Fee: Free for UCLA affiliates (student\, faculty\, or staff)\, $100 per participant otherwise. \nRegister for this session at XSEDE portal

SUMMARY:Supercomputing for Everyone Series: Performance Tuning Summer School
DESCRIPTION:From a user perspective\, supercomputers are more complicated to program and handle than an ordinary desktop workstation. Unfortunately this leads to parallel programs that do not necessarily satisfy the performance expectations of the users. Such unexpected performance results can have many reasons. Basic knowledge on performance modeling\, prediction and verification\, as taught in this summer school\, is needed by users to formulate and verify their performance expectation. \nThe goals for this class are:\n– Motivating the need for performance considerations\n– Establishing a common performance vocabulary\n– Learning the standard situations/parameters to have an eye on\n– Getting to know the tools that provide insight\n– Establishing a higher throughput of experiments\n– Running bigger experiments \nA rough table of content for the class looks as follows: \nDay 1: Performance Engineering (theory + examples)\nDay 2: Easy to use workflows (the first step\, with very low burden\, mostly automated) at IU\nDay 3: Usage of advanced tools (profile- and trace-based) at IU\nDay 4: Tuning of hybrid programs (message passing\, threading\, accelerators)\nDay 5: Theoretical considerations (Experimental design\, performance modeling) \nThe class contains lectures and labs so that the participants immediately put the newly acquired knowledge to work. \nPrerequisites: Basic programming and command line skills on Linux systems \n\nRegistration Fee: Free for UCLA affiliates (student\, faculty\, or staff)\, $100 per participant otherwise. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for this session at XSEDE portal

SUMMARY:Profiling – Code Clinic Session
DESCRIPTION:Optimization and parallel scalability of software are essential for High performance computing. The Department of Energy\, National Science Foundation\, and the National Aeronautical Space Agency support an ecosystem of “leadership class” computing facilities that include several of the world’s most advanced supercomputers as well as high-end visualization and data analysis resources.  Access to these resources is freely available to those who can demonstrate that their research topic requires these resources and that their software can utilize these resources. \nThe IDRE Pipeline program aims to transition UCLA researchers from local resources such as Hoffman2 and take advantage of the free\, magnificent “leadership class” computing facilities. A first step in optimizing and improving the parallel scalability of software so it can run effectively on leadership class facilities is  profiling the software whereby one identifies how much computing time is spent within various subroutines\, how well the code runs on one computing core\, and how well it scales on many computing cores. \nThe purpose of this session is to describe few basic profiling techniques and help researchers at UCLA in gaining more insight into how well their application code runs on Hoffman2 or even larger systems. \nIn particular we focus on:\nLearning profiling techniques that are available on Hoffman2.\nProviding hands on examples – bring your own software. \nPrerequisite: 1) User account on hoffman2 – apply here if you are not a Hoffman account user already. 2) Your own laptop to access the Hoffman2 cluster. 3) Your software on Hoffman2. \nSpace is limited.  Please RSVP ONLINE to attend this seminar.

DESCRIPTION:This two-hour session is aimed to help researchers who are new to Linux. The session will introduce basic Unix/Linux commands\, shells\, as well as a few basic editors available on most of the Linux systems. It will also describe the compilation and execution procedures for a given program. A sample software code will be used to describe the computing tools such as makefile\, debugger\, and profiler that are available under most Linux environments.
