SUMMARY:Introduction to R
DESCRIPTION:R is a programming environment that runs on Windows\, Macintosh and UNIX platforms. This class is designed for people who are just starting to use R. The students in the class will have a hands-on experience using R for doing statistics\, graphics\, and data management. The class notes are the scripts for the class. The R class notes do not contain any of the computer output. The class notes are not meant to be an R textbook or a reference manual. However\, it is possible for individuals to use the class notes to help them learn R even if they don’t enroll in the class. \nStudents should bring their own laptop computers with R 3.6.1 (https://cran.r-project.org/ ) installed.  Installation of R-Studio (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/ ) is also strongly recommended.

SUMMARY:Job Scheduling on Hoffman2 Cluster
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss how to effectively run jobs on Hoffman2 cluster which serves a wide spectrum of user applications and is almost always heavily loaded. We will first review the model and policy of Hoffman2’s job scheduling\, followed by fundamentals of using its job scheduler\, Univa Grid Engine. A number of common use cases will be discussed in details\, including: (1) Single-CPU jobs\, (2) Multi-CPU\, same-node jobs\, (3) Multiple-node (MPI-style) jobs\, (4) Job arrays and (5) High-priority jobs.  \n

SUMMARY:Making PDFs the Easy Way
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nPDF is one of the most common document formats at UCLA. People who are blind\, low-vision or have dyslexia rely on assistive technologies and screenreading software to “read text out loud” to them. However\, many PDF documents created are completely inaccessible or frustrating for screenreader users. Public PDFs posted on websites\, PDF course reading material and PDFs emailed to listservs should be accessible to people who use screenreaders and other assistive technologies. During this one and a half hour long active learning session\, you will have the opportunity to get hands-on training in making an accessible PDF. \nPlease bring a laptop with Adobe Acrobat installed. If you do not have a laptop one will be provided for you at the Learning Lab. \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this training you should be able to: \n\nDescribe what PDF accessibility is and why it important\nProperly scan a book or paper to convert to PDF\nRun the PDF accessibility checker\nSet image alt tags\nBuild header structure into the PDF\nSet proper reading order\nUse a color contrast checker

SUMMARY:Job scheduling on Hoffman2 Cluster
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss how to effectively run jobs on Hoffman2 cluster. Hoffman2 cluster serves a wide spectrum of user applications and is almost always heavily loaded. We will first review the model and policy of Hoffman2’s job scheduling\, followed by fundamentals of using its job scheduler\, Univa Grid Engine. A number of common use cases will be discussed in details\, including: (1) Single-CPU jobs\, (2) Multi-CPU\, same-node jobs\, (3) Multiple-node (MPI-style) jobs and (4) Job arrays. \nIf you have questions regarding the workshop\, please contact the instructor Shao-Ching Huang.

SUMMARY:Making PDFs Accessible the Easy Way
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nPDF is one of the most common document formats at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Programming in Go
DESCRIPTION:This short course will cover the basics of the Go language for those who already are familiar with an imperative programming environment like Python. The Go programming language (golang) is a simple\, high-performance imperative programming language. It has the benefits of a strongly typed\, compiled language along with many of the benefits of popular scripting languages like Python. The course will assume familiarity with another imperative language so we can use comparisons (to Python) to leverage familiarity and move quickly. We will also discuss the basic toolchain used in Go programming along with its standard library. We’ll wrap up with some quick exposure to Go’s performance and facilities for supporting concurrent programming. \n  \n\nIf you have questions regarding the workshop\, please contact the instructor Scott Friedman.

SUMMARY:Decomposing Interactions in R
DESCRIPTION:In regression\, we are often interested in an interaction\, which is the modification of the effect of an independent variable by another. Interactions can be decomposed in three ways\, by 1) testing each effect against zero\, 2) testing differences among effects\, and 3) graphing. This workshop will demonstrate how to do all three analyses in R for the following interaction models: continuous-by-continuous\, categorical-by-continuous\, and categorical-by-categorical. Some hands-on exercises will be presented. Recommended: Prior knowledge of linear regression and a laptop with R installed. \nThis workshop will be hands-on.  So participants should bring their own laptop with R installed. \nIf you have questions or comments regarding this event\, contact Statistical Consulting Group. \nNOTE: This event is only available in-person at UCLA. There will not be online access to this event. Please only register for the event if you are able to attend in-person.
