SUMMARY:Building programs from source code
DESCRIPTION:In the era of open source software\, there are a wide range of useful and free programs for researchers to take advantage of\, including novel utility programs and innovative research codes. However\, it may be necessary to build (compile/link) these programs before using them. During this process\, one can run into errors like “command not found”\, “undefined reference”\, “GLIBC_x.xx not found”\, or “illegal instruction.” The process can become frustrating or confusing without a good understanding of how the compiler or the build system works. In this talk\, we will explain how one can resolve or avoid these errors\, and we will aim to minimize any knowledge gaps by explaining the mechanisms behind building programs from source in a Linux environment. \nAny questions about this workshop can be emailed to Shao-Ching Huang at schuang@oarc.ucla.edu. \nPresented by the Office of Advanced Research Computing. \nRegister here: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJApdOuuqT0iEtBx6kp_hIQpBdm_t9oYO1v4

SUMMARY:Docker software platform: Practice
DESCRIPTION:Built on a hypersivor of host operation system\, virtual machine (VM) offers an isolated virtual environment providing functionality needed to execute guest operation systems (OS) and applications. However\, VMs usually require heavy computer resources to execute OS and programs. Alternatively\, an advanced technique so-called containerization has been developed in the recent years for many applications. Containerization provides a mechanism where software/applications can be abstracted from the environment they originally run. These two workshops will introduce the basic concepts and usage of Docker containerization\, including its four major components: image\, container\, data volume\, and network. We will also discuss how to write the Dockerfile and run your applications from local computer to cloud services. \nAny questions about this workshop can be emailed to Jerry Huang at hyhuang@oarc.ucla.edu. \nPresented by the Office of Advanced Research Computing. \nRegister here: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcocu-rrT0qGdTjO4VN9vlRH3Bc5T4298tH

SUMMARY:Stability and Resolvent Analysis of Fluid Flows - Methods and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Victoria Rolandi\, Ph.D.\nIDRE Fellow\nMechanical and Aerospace Department\nUniversity of California Los Angeles \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Virtual via Zoom\n \nRecording available at: https://youtu.be/m9MTRk0ggrk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Understanding the transition of fluid flows has been and still is a crucial focus in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has greatly helped on this side and has opened the door to other branches in fluid dynamics\, such as flow control. By leveraging insights on flow transition\, flow control technology can help mitigate the human impact of environmental and noise pollution caused by fluid-based systems such as aircraft\, automobiles\, and wind turbines\, all while improving their overall performance. \nFrom linear stability analysis to resolvent analysis\, this talk will cover some of the methods that enable such investigations and the limitations\, in terms of computational resources\, on applying them to turbulent flows. \nAbout Speaker: Dr. Rolandi obtained a BSc in Mathematical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino and an MSc in Computational Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. She later completed a Ph.D. in Fluid Dynamics at the Institute Supérieure de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE-Supaero) before joining the Mechanical and Aerospace department at UCLA as a postdoctoral researcher at Professor Taira’s Lab. Her research at UCLA focuses on developing and implementing algorithms helpful in characterizing\, modeling\, and controlling turbulent flows.

SUMMARY:Building Containers for HPC
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a follow-up to a previous workshop on “Using Containers on HPC Resources”. This workshop will focus on creating containers to be ran on HPC resources. We will go over building containers using Docker/podman and Apptainer/Singularity. We will also use Hoffman2 to run our newly built containers. To follow along\, users will need to install Docker or podman as well as Apptainer or Singularity on a computer they have root/admin access (Or you can just listen a watch). A GitHub or DockerHub account would also be needed to store our containers. We will provide a VM image for VituralBox with the software install. \nAny questions about this workshop can be emailed to Charles Peterson at cpeterson@oarc.ucla.edu. \nPresented by the Office of Advanced Research Computing. \nRegister here: https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwsf-ivqTktG9DQDqYP3-Qi4vRrFg7RZcj5
