SUMMARY:Part of the series: From Scripts to Software: Practical Python for Reproducible Research\nHaving learned how to write sustainable\, object-oriented code and how to scale it across multiple processors\, we will now explore how to dramatically accelerate your computations using Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).\n\nModern GPUs are massively parallel processors that can perform millions of identical operations at once. This makes them incredibly powerful for a wide range of scientific workloads\, from numerical simulations to deep learning. We will discuss: (1) The difference between CPU and GPU architectures. (2) The CUDA ecosystem\, which is the foundation of GPU computing. (3) JAX\, a modern Python library that provides a high-level\, Pythonic interface to GPUs.

SUMMARY:Part of the series: From Scripts to Software: Practical Python for Reproducible Research \nThis hands-on workshop will introduce you to the principles of modern software development and show you how to apply them to your scientific projects. We will move beyond simple scripting and learn how to write Python code that is robust\, reusable\, and ready for the challenges of modern research. While the examples are in Python\, the underlying principles of software design are universal and apply to any programming language.\n\nNext workshops as part of the series: Scaling Your Science with Parallel Computing (10/16) and Accelerating Your Code with GPUs (10/30)

SUMMARY:Academic researchers across disciplines—from archaeology and medicine to data science and the digital humanities—increasingly need to create\, manipulate\, and display three-dimensional models. Whether reconstructing historical sites\, visualizing complex protein structures\, or building virtual environments for psychological experiments\, the challenge is often the same: how to produce custom\, accurate\, and performance-optimized 3D assets without access to large budgets or specialized digital arts training. Commercial software can be prohibitively expensive\, and outsourcing asset creation can sever the direct link between the research and its visual representation. There is a need for tools that are accessible\, powerful\, and versatile enough to support the entire 3D production pipeline within a research context. \nThis workshop will introduce options for all-levels\, from rapid prototyping to detailed rendering\, and will provide examples from a variety of disciplines. Participants will also learn how to use AI to support the pipeline from idea to 3D assets to AR or VR output (using https://www.8thwall.com/) and how agentic AI can be applied to avatars in VR environments (https://www.mud.foundation/mud-verse) . \n\nParticipants are encouraged to reach out to the workshop organizer in advance with any specific tools of interest.

SUMMARY:ESRI is a leading industry provider of geospatial tools and research\, featuring a wide variety of products from AI enhanced analysis to web-publishing solutions for classroom projects. The sheer number of different tools and applications offered by the ESRI digital ecosystem can appear overwhelming\, as can the documentation and associated tutorials. To lower the barrier for using ESRI products\, UCLA has a comprehensive licensing agreement with ESRI\, and offers tutorials\, consultations\, and direct assistance with using the software.\nAs part of these efforts\, this workshop introduces UCLA researchers to the wide range of ESRI products and services available free of charge through the university. Participants will learn about our single-signon access and ESRI products\, and the capabilities of ArcGIS Online\, StoryMaps\, and other ESRI tools to support mapping\, spatial analysis\, and data visualization across disciplines for research and teaching\, with examples pulled directly from the Digital Humanities\, Social Sciences\, and Healthcare. We will also highlight the types of support available from OARC to the campus community\, including training\, research consultations\, teaching support\, and guidance on best practices for incorporating geospatial tools into your interests. Whether you are new to GIS or looking to expand your use of ESRI products\, this session will provide a clear overview of the resources and expertise available at UCLA.
