SUMMARY:Covariate Selection in Regression: A Crash Course on Good and Bad Controls
DESCRIPTION:Choosing which covariates to control for in regression models is a well-known challenge\, and clear guidance on this issue is often lacking. Causal diagrams\, specifically directed acyclic graphs (DAGs)\, offer a powerful framework for addressing this challenge. This workshop discusses the paper “A Crash Course in Good and Bad Controls” (Cinelli\, Forney\, & Pearl\, 2022)\, which introduces the concepts of “good” and “bad” controls in statistical regression analysis and clarifies when adding a variable improves or undermines the accuracy of causal effect estimates. \nThrough a series of simulated examples\, we will demonstrate how different variable structures can lead to bias reduction (good controls)\, bias amplification (bad controls)\, or neutral effects\, and discuss how some neutral controls can nonetheless influence the precision of estimates. The workshop’s primary goal is to show how DAGs can be used systematically to identify appropriate control variables\, enabling valid causal interpretations of regression models. \nWhile the material is primarily conceptual\, all simulations and DAG visualizations will be demonstrated in R\, with additional discussion on how AI tools can be used to support this workflow.

DESCRIPTION:There has been a rising interest in volumetric video capture\, a method for recording real-world people\, objects\, performances\, or spaces in full 3D\, creating data that allows viewers to experience the recording from any angle\, with realistic depth and lighting\, rather than being stuck in a fixed viewpoint like traditional video (Jin et.al. 2024 and Young et.al. 2023). This technique is valuable across academic disciplines\, enabling the preservation of cultural heritage\, the creation of training simulations\, and high-fidelity analysis of human movement and performance in fields like bio-mechanics and digital humanities. This session will focus on the Depthkit Core software\, which\, when paired with depth sensors like the Kinect v2 or RealSense\, allows creators to generate high-quality volumetric assets for immersive experiences. The workshop will also cover Depthkit Studio\, which can be used to achieve real-time\, live-streamed volumetric video for live events. SUMMARY:Machine Learning for Atomic-Scale Materials Modeling and Simulation
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce researchers to cutting-edge machine learning (ML) methods that are transforming computational chemistry and materials science. Participants will learn how ML models can accelerate atomistic simulations\, bridging the gap between quantum-level accuracy and realistic system sizes. The session will highlight practical workflows\, including training potentials on quantum mechanical data\, developing ensembles of models for a real system\, and identifying the most promising candidates for practical applications. Examples will focus on heterogeneous catalysis—such as modeling catalysts and identifying active sites—but the methodologies are broadly transferable across materials science and related fields. \nTarget Audience: UCLA graduate students\, postdoctoral researchers\, and faculty in chemistry\, chemical engineering\, materials science\, physics\, and related disciplines. \nLearning Outcomes: \na. Understand the “accuracy versus scale” challenge in computational modeling of complex materials. \nb. Learn how neural network potentials can be trained on quantum mechanical data to achieve both high accuracy and scalability. \nc. In this workshop series\, we’ll tackle how to enhance Python’s performance in data science by diving deep into its workings and leveraging technologies to transform Python into an effective tool for high-performance big data analytics.\nIn this quarter\, we’ll concentrate on significantly accelerating Python code at the interpreter level. We’ll demystify concepts such as the GIL and JIT and introduce packages like PyPy\, Numba\, Pythran\, and Cython. While there are no strict prerequisites for this lecture\, prior programming experience in Python will be advantageous for a complete understanding of the material.

Using the NIH-funded UCLA Oralytics oral health app as an example\, we’ll show how messages like reminders\, tips\, and “just-in-time” behavioral nudges can help participants stay engaged between visits and better follow study protocols. We’ll focus on concepts rather than code—how messaging can support your study goals\, the types of messages you might send\, and how OARC can partner with your team to design and implement messaging in your own research apps.

DESCRIPTION:n regression\, we are often interested in an interaction\, which is the modification or moderation of the effect of an independent variable by another.  Understanding interactions involves interpreting the regression coefficients\, estimating and testing simple effects and their differences\, and visualizing the interaction.  This workshop will teach you how to do all of these thing in R using base R\, as well as the emmeans and ggplot2 packages.  Some prior knowledge of linear regression and experience with R is recommended but not necessary.
