In this workshop, we will cover the types of patient data that are now available and how researchers can search for patient cohorts of interest and then appropriately access information about these patients, depending on the needs of their study. For studies that would involve patient contact, we will describe our processes for extracting and using patient data. For studies that only need retrospective data, we will describe how a data set can be assembled and either fully or partially de-identified, depending on the study’s needs. We will cover the rules and regulations that must be followed in using identified or de-identified patient data for research.
Attendees will learn to use two recently completed systems that enable researchers to count the number of patient records that meet different study inclusion and exclusion criteria. The University of California Research eXchange (UC-ReX) searches for patients across the five University of California medical centers (UCLA, UCSF, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UCSD). The Los Angeles Data Resource (LADR) system searches for patients among Los Angeles-area institutions. Currently, it encompasses UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Health System, and within the next year we expect it to also include USC, City of Hope, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and other health care organizations. Attendees who complete this workshop and sign a user agreement will be granted accounts that enable them to use the system at their convenience.
The workshop will also cover additional topics related to transdisciplinary studies involving data derived from health care. Marc Suchard (Biomathematics and Genetics) will introduce new statistical approaches and tools for the analysis of observational data, Corey Arnold (Radiology) will review natural language processing methods for annotating textual data, and John Heritage (Sociology) will present on conversational analysis of health care interactions.
