Members of the IDRE Board have formed four working groups that will address IDRE’s four focus areas: Computational Science, Data Science, Information Science, and Digital Scholarship and Creative Activities. Together, they will develop initiatives for faculty and scholars to focus their collective efforts on ambitious and timely initiatives, share experiences and lessons learned, and build successful collaborations. For example, the Data and Information Science working groups will function as a critical links between the south and north campus. Additionally, the creation of the Digital Scholarship and Creative Activities working group recognizes the importance of engaging all faculty, including those who may not necessarily identify their research (including creative activities) as strictly aligned with computational or data-intensive research. The focus areas represent IDRE’s commitment to fostering multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary digitally-enabled research across UCLA.
Each working group will continually examine and realign its focus to changing campus and faculty needs, new technologies, shifts in the national funding landscape, strategic areas for new faculty hires, and areas for enriching and coordinating education in digitally enabled scholarship. For example, the Computational Science working group hopes to facilitate a transition from a traditional brick and mortar laboratory to a virtual lab space, so that students and researchers can access data and storage remotely. The working groups will provide a roadmap for IDRE to achieve its vision and serve its mission.
About the Working Groups:
Computational Science workgroup: using advanced computing to address current and future concerns.
Members of this group include: Martha Bailey, Dora Costa, and Marc Suchard
Data Science workgroup: extracting knowledge from data to respond to the opportunities and challenges associated with research data.
Members of this group include: Sudipto Banerjee, Keith Chen, Alexander Hoffman, Edward (Ted) Parson, and Todd Presner, aka the DataX Committee
Information Science workgroup: studying the storage and retrieval of information to increase our fundamental knowledge and pave a pathway to share new ideas.
Members of this group include: Willeke Wendrich and Todd Grappone
Digital Scholarship workgroup: using digital technologies to tackle complex inquiries into cultural and social problems.
Members of this group include: Chris Johanson and Raymond Knapp
As the working groups produce outcomes, they will be shared on IDRE’s webpages for the respective focus areas.
