Description: Quantum computing is rapidly getting better but still has some way to go before it can make a difference in science and business. I will introduce the field, give the status of current hardware and simulators, and point to resources for learning more about the technology and algorithms. Along the way, I will mention some of the many quantum researchers at UCLA, and I will highlight UCLA’s new quantum masters degree.

About the speaker: Jens Palsberg is a Professor and former Department Chair of Computer Science at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research interests span the areas of programming languages, software engineering, and quantum computing. He is the director of the UCLA-Amazon Science Hub for Humanity and Artificial Intelligence, an associate editor of ACM Transactions on Quantum Computing, and a member of the ACM Executive Committee. In 2012 he received the ACM SIGPLAN Distinguished Service Award, and in 2023 he received the Eon Instrumentation Inc. Excellence in Teaching Award at UCLA.
