In the era of open source software, there are a wide range of useful and free programs for researchers to take advantage of, including novel utility programs and innovative research codes. However, it may be necessary to build (compile/link) these programs before using them. During this process, one can run into errors like “command not found”, “undefined reference”, “GLIBC_x.xx not found”, or “illegal instruction.” The process can become frustrating or confusing without a good understanding of how the compiler or the build system works. In this talk, we will explain how one can resolve or avoid these errors, and we will aim to minimize any knowledge gaps by explaining the mechanisms behind building programs from source in a Linux environment.
